How long do genital warts last?

Genital warts may spontaneously go away within a year. With genital warts treatment, the warts can resolve much faster—within 3 months.

Healthcare providers usually recommend trying a new genital wart therapy if your warts haven't responded after 3 weeks or if they haven't gone away completely after 6 to 12 weeks of wart treatment.

Because these treatments don't cure human papillomavirus (HPV) itself, it's not uncommon for genital warts to return, especially within the first few months after treatment.

Common genital warts medications

Your Amazon One Medical provider will determine which (if any) topical anogenital wart treatment is medically appropriate for you based on your symptoms and health history. If you're prescribed medication, pick it up at a pharmacy of your choice. The cost of your prescribed medication may be covered by health insurance.

In-person treatments and procedures like interferon injection, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), bichloracetic acid (BCA), cryotherapy (freezing warts), electrocautery (burning warts), and surgical removal aren't available through telehealth.

Frequently asked questions

About Amazon One Medical

What are my telehealth options for this condition?
Amazon One Medical offers multiple ways to get care from the comfort of your own home.

If you're a One Medical member and you live in a state where One Medical has offices, you can schedule Remote Visits with One Medical providers, which are billable to you or your health insurance. As a member, you can also get 24/7 on-demand virtual care with Treat Me Now or Urgent Video Chat via the One Medical app at no extra cost, no matter where you live in the United States.

If you're not a One Medical member, you can start a one-time virtual visit with Pay-per-visit. Pay-per-visit offers two types of telehealth for Amazon customers: video visits and message-only visits. Video visits are available for $49 in all 50 states and D.C. Message-only visits are currently available for $29 in 34 states.

To see your Pay-per-visit options, first choose your state.
Can I use my health insurance for Pay-per-visit?
Amazon One Medical doesn't accept health insurance for Pay-per-visit care. You can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you for your one-time virtual visit.

If you normally use insurance to pay for your medications, you can do that with medications prescribed through all Amazon One Medical services. Amazon Pharmacy accepts most insurance plans. For other pharmacies, please talk with your pharmacy directly about insurance coverage. The cost of medication isn’t included in the cost of your visit.
What happens if my provider can't diagnose or treat my health issue through Amazon One Medical Pay-per-visit?
If your provider can’t diagnose or treat your health issue through Pay-per-visit, they may recommend that you see a primary care provider or a specialist for in-person care. If that happens, you won't be charged.
Can I communicate with a provider after I get my Pay-per-visit treatment plan?
Yes. When you use Pay-per-visit, you can message with One Medical providers within your personal dashboard for an additional 2 weeks (14 days) at no extra cost. This complimentary communication window allows you time to:
Ask follow-up questions about any prescriptions or over-the-counter medications in your treatment plan

• Connect with a provider if you think your treatment needs to be adjusted

• Tell a provider if you're experiencing side effects from your medication

• Tell a provider if there's an issue getting your prescription from the pharmacy

• Let the One Medical care team know that you're feeling better
Your secure, HIPAA-compliant message will be received by the first available provider, who will be able to review your visit’s treatment plan and any follow-up correspondence. If you still need treatment adjustments or have questions after the 14-day communication window, you'll need to start a new visit.
What if I want to refill my medication?
If your provider didn't include refills with a prescription when they sent your treatment plan through Pay-per-visit, you'll need to start a new one-time virtual visit to request another prescription.

There are many reasons why a provider may decide that prescription refills aren't medically appropriate. For example, they may want to assess how well a medication is working and whether or not it needs to be adjusted before you continue with the same treatment.
How does Amazon One Medical protect my health information?
Amazon One Medical protects customers’ protected health information (PHI) with stringent, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant privacy and security practices to keep information safe and secure.

We’re committed to building an infrastructure that fosters and promotes a culture of customer privacy and a strong commitment to safeguarding health information. We maintain administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect customer information. This includes conducting rigorous security reviews and testing during product development, using encryption to protect data, and providing features like two-step verification to help customers protect their accounts.

Amazon does not sell customers’ personal information, including PHI.

About genital warts and HPV

What causes genital warts?
Genital warts are caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV). There are over 180 subtypes of HPV, but the vast majority of people with genital warts have type 6 or type 11. These low-risk infections can trigger small growths (warts) on mucosal surfaces like the genitals or anus. Other subtypes of HPV, particularly type 16 and 18, are considered high risk because they may eventually lead to cancer in both men and women.

HPV spreads through sexual contact as the virus enters the body through fragile skin. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is the world's most common sexually transmitted infection (STI).
How are genital warts diagnosed?
Healthcare providers diagnose genital warts in person by visual inspection and sometimes through further clinical testing. You must have a prior diagnosis of HPV to request genital warts treatment through Amazon One Medical Pay-per-visit.
What do genital warts look like for men and women?
Genital warts (condyloma acuminatum) are usually small, flesh-colored, and painless growths. They can appear separately or in clusters. When in clusters, they may have a cauliflower shape. They can sometimes be itchy.

Men

Genital warts can appear on the tip or shaft of the penis, the scrotum, and/or the anus (anal warts).

Women

Genital warts can appear outside or inside the vagina, around the anus, and/or on the perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus).
How do I know if I have HPV?
Low-risk HPV can be diagnosed from a confirmed outbreak of genital warts. But 90% of people with HPV won't get genital warts. In fact, their infections will go away on their own within about 2 years.

When certain HPV infections don't clear naturally, they can bring serious long-term health risks. High-risk types of HPV infection are associated with the following cancers:
• Cervical cancer in women
• Vaginal and vulvar cancers in women
• Penile cancer in men
• Anal cancer in men and women
• Mouth and throat (oropharyngeal) cancer in men and women
If you're a woman, the only way to detect an HPV infection that can cause cervical dysplasia or cancer is through regular Pap smears. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women aged 21 to 29 get Pap smears every 3 years. Women aged 30 to 65 can either get Pap smears every 3 years, opt for high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) testing every 5 years, or get both screenings every 5 years.

If you're a man who has sex with men (MSM), a healthcare provider may recommend an anal Pap smear to test for cell abnormalities.
How do I know who gave me genital warts?
Genital warts can appear months or even years after someone is infected with HPV 6 or 11. Therefore, it can be difficult to determine when the exposure to HPV occurred.

It's possible to infect sexual partners with the virus even if you never get HPV symptoms like genital warts. Condoms are only somewhat effective in blocking transmission, as they don't prevent all skin-to-skin contact.
Can I get the HPV vaccine at any age?
You can get the 9 valent HPV vaccine (Gardasil 9, Cervarix) through the age of 26. HPV vaccination is most effective when it's given before someone becomes sexually active, which is why it's often recommended for children aged 9 to 12. If you're over the age of 26, you can talk to a primary care provider about the vaccine's efficacy.

HPV vaccination prevents you from getting a number of subtypes of the virus, including types 6 and 11 (low risk) and types 16 and 18 (high risk). These infections can cause conditions that range from genital warts to anal cancer.
