What's the difference between weight loss treatment with On-Demand Care and weight loss treatment with Scheduled Visits?

Answer

Amazon One Medical offers two ways to request prescription GLP-1 treatment for weight loss: Scheduled Visits and On-Demand Care.

If you want to use health insurance to pay for your weight loss care and medications, and you live near a One Medical office, then we recommend Scheduled Visits. You can then schedule insurance-billable visits through the One Medical app. Comprehensive weight loss care may include lab orders and prior authorizations.

If you choose On-Demand Care, you pay as you go for your online weight loss treatment. The On-Demand Care GLP-1 program is designed for customers who want to pay cash for their treatments and medications. On-Demand Care does not support prior authorizations.

Question 2

Can I use my health insurance to pay for Amazon One Medical On-Demand Care (formerly Pay-per-visit)?

Answer

Amazon One Medical doesn't accept health insurance for On-Demand Care, its 24/7 telehealth service. If you're not a One Medical member and you pay for online weight loss care out of pocket, you can submit a claim to your insurance provider for reimbursement, but we can’t guarantee they’ll reimburse you.

What happens if my provider can't diagnose or treat my health issue through On-Demand Care?

Answer

We do our best to make sure you’re eligible for online treatment before you connect with a provider. When you request On-Demand Care, your health intake helps us understand whether you can be treated virtually, or if you'll need to be seen in person for more closely managed care. If your answers indicate that we can't treat you through our service, we'll let you know why, then recommend next steps so you can find the care you need.

Additionally, your provider may determine that you cannot be treated through our service after reviewing your health intake. If this happens, your treatment will be canceled and you won't be charged.

Question 4

Can I still connect with a provider after I'm treated through On-Demand Care?

Answer

Yes. When you receive treatment through On-Demand Care, you can message with your One Medical care team for an additional 2 weeks (14 days) regarding your care summary. This communication window allows you time to:

• Ask follow-up questions about any prescriptions or over-the-counter medications in your care summary

• Connect with a provider if you think your treatment needs to be adjusted

• Tell a provider if you're experiencing side effects from your medication

• Tell a provider if there's an issue getting your prescription from the pharmacy

Your secure, HIPAA-compliant message will be received by the first available provider, who will be able to review your care summary and any follow-up correspondence. If you still need treatment adjustments or have questions after the 14-day communication window, you'll need to request a new treatment.

How does Amazon One Medical protect my health information?

Answer

Amazon One Medical protects customers’ protected health information (PHI) with stringent, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant privacy and security practices to keep information safe and secure.

We’re committed to building an infrastructure that fosters and promotes a culture of customer privacy and a strong commitment to safeguarding health information. We maintain administrative, physical, and technical safeguards to protect customer information. This includes conducting rigorous security reviews and testing during product development, using encryption to protect data, and providing features like two-step verification to help customers protect their accounts.

Amazon does not sell customers’ personal information, including PHI.

Question 6

Who is eligible for GLP-1 treatment for weight loss?

Answer

A licensed healthcare provider may prescribe a GLP-1 medication like liraglutide or semaglutide for weight management if you're:

• Have a BMI ≥30kg/m²

• Have a BMI ≥27 kg/m² and have at least one related health issue (like high blood pressure or sleep apnea)

• Have a current GLP-1 prescription that you'd like to start managing through our weight loss service

But some underlying health issues can rule out GLP-1 treatment. These include:

• Personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer

• Personal or family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)

• Inflammatory bowel disease or celiac disease

• Gastroparesis

• Pancreatitis

• Gallbladder disease

• Heart failure

• Kidney disease (eGFR < 60mL/min on lab work)

If you're not eligible for GLP-1 treatment through On-Demand Care, we recommend talking to an in-person healthcare provider about alternative weight loss therapies.

Question 7

What kind of blood work (labs) will I need to provide to get weight loss treatment through On-Demand Care?

Answer

Recent blood test results should include a creatinine, an eGFR, and a fasting glucose (blood sugar) level. These are common labs (“creatinine”, “eGFR,” and “glucose”) included in a basic or comprehensive metabolic panel or a specialized weight management panel. If you don’t have a fasting glucose, you can upload a hemoglobin A1c as an alternative.

If you don't have recent lab work to share, you can purchase lab tests directly from any consumer lab testing service of your choice. Labs are not included in your treatment price and must be purchased separately.

Question 8

How long will it take me to lose weight on a GLP-1?

Answer

In the first few weeks of starting GLP-1 treatment, your body is adjusting. You may notice some early weight loss, and your On-Demand Care team will be monitoring for common side effects like nausea. More meaningful results, typically greater than 5% weight loss, usually happen around week 12 as we gradually increase your dose (called titration). Research shows that the most rapid weight loss happens between months 3 and 6.

What's the difference between a GLP-1 medication and a "GLP-1 supplement" for weight loss?

Answer

GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) are FDA-approved prescription drugs that have been evaluated for safety and efficacy. They require a prescription and medical supervision from licensed healthcare providers.

"GLP-1 supplements" that claim to be appetite suppressants or weight loss aids are unregulated, non-prescription products that haven't been FDA-approved for weight loss treatment.

How do GLP-1s quiet "food noise"?

Answer

GLP-1 medications can help reduce "food noise" (persistent and intrusive thoughts about food and eating) by:

• Altering brain signaling pathways related to food rewards and cravings

• Reducing the hormone ghrelin (often called the "hunger hormone")

• Decreasing emotional eating triggers

• Helping to regulate appetite centers in the brain

Many patients report feeling more in control of their eating decisions and less preoccupied with food while taking GLP-1s.

What are the common side effects of GLP-1 treatment?

Answer

Common GLP-1 side effects include:

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Constipation

• Stomach pain

In addition to weight loss, studies have suggested numerous potential health benefits of GLP-1s, including:

Will I regain weight if I stop taking my GLP-1?

Answer

Research shows that weight regain is common after stopping GLP-1 medications, but the rate and amount of regain varies by individual.

If you and your healthcare provider decide to gradually reduce your dose of GLP-1 or stop the medication altogether, studies show that you can minimize your potential weight regain by:

Why can't I lose weight without medication?

Answer

Body weight and health are shaped by many factors, not just personal choices. While nutrition, movement, and other lifestyle changes can support health, they don’t work the same way for everyone. Genetics, stress, access to healthy food and safe places to move, medical conditions, and certain medications all play a role. For some people, these factors make it especially hard to see meaningful or lasting changes from lifestyle approaches alone. In those situations, medications like GLP-1s can be a helpful tool, used alongside other supports, to improve health and quality of life.

Can I request a compounded GLP-1 medication through Amazon One Medical On-Demand Care?

Answer

No. If you're already taking a compounded medication for weight loss, your Amazon One Medical provider can help you transition to a standard GLP-1 medication regimen that can be filled by a standard pharmacy. But they won't write a prescription for a compounded medication.

Can I get GLP-1 weight loss pills through Amazon One Medical On-Demand Care?

Answer

Yes. You can request oral semaglutide (Wegovy) or oral orforglipron (Foundayo) GLP-1 medication through this online weight loss service. But Amazon One Medical providers will only prescribe GLP-1 medications, not weight loss pills like phentermine-topiramate (Qsymia), naltrexone-bupropion (Contrave), phentermine (Adipex-P), or orlistat (Xenical).

What's the best GLP-1 diet?

Answer

With less appetite for food and a lower calorie intake, you risk not getting all your essential nutrients when taking GLP-1 medication. Focusing on smaller, nutrient-dense meals can help you lose weight safely and avoid deficiencies.

For specific guidance on what to eat while taking GLP-1s, talk to your healthcare provider. But in general, experts recommend:

• Focusing on protein-rich foods

• Eating smaller portions

• Staying hydrated

• Including fiber-rich vegetables in your meal plans
