Can I request an asthma prescription renewal for my child?

Yes, if you are a parent or legal guardian who can manage care for the child. Your child must be between ages 2 and 11 years old.
Asthma is slightly more commonly diagnosed in children than adults but childhood cases are often less severe and do not always continue into adulthood. Proper management of your child’s asthma treatment, like keeping your prescription up-to-date, is important for the care of childhood asthma treatment.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects breathing. People with asthma have airways (the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs) that can be sensitive to certain triggers, leading to airway swelling and narrowing. This makes it difficult for air to pass through.
Asthma develops from a combination of genetic factors (it runs in families) and environmental exposures such as allergens, air pollution, tobacco smoke, and respiratory infections, particularly during childhood.

What are asthma symptoms and how do you control them?

Common asthma symptoms include wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing), shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough. Symptoms may be worse at night or early in the morning. To control asthma, many people use a daily controller medication (like an inhaled corticosteroid) to reduce airway inflammation, plus a quick-relief inhaler for sudden symptoms. Avoiding triggers like smoke, allergens, cold air, and respiratory infections also helps prevent symptoms.
In children, asthma symptoms may appear as frequent coughing (especially at night), wheezing with colds or exercise, difficulty keeping up with other children during play. In young children, breathing problems may interfere with feeding.
